Zainal, PhD, is the recipient of the National Academic Award for Teaching (Anugerah Akademik Negara) 2008 and Outstanding Educators Award 2007 from Universiti Sains Malaysia.
He is an Associate Fellow with the Academic of Sciences Malaysia and currently heads the National R&D Survey 2015. At the national level, Dr. Zainal has served as grant reviewer for Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) Science Fund since 2011.
